1980 Mazda RX3

January 21, 2026ClassifiedEdward Hinsa

$8,500 or best offer for the entire package. Will separate/customize package.
I’m new to VSCDA and wanted to see if anyone is interested in this project. I’ll be running my GT3 rotary Miata with VSCDA this year.

This RX3 has been a race car since 1980. It was built and campaigned by the late SCCA National Champion (MG) Bill Koch. The car competed mainly in SCCA events but also competed in three IMSA races. Twice in the “Columbus 500” street race and also the 1986 Lumbermans event at Mid-Ohio.

I’m a long-time SCCA Mazda rotary racer and I purchased this car a few years ago with the intent of restoring it. I was going to sell the quick change rear end and reinstall the MGB rear end that the car was raced with.  Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to do anything to it.

This car will be sold “As is” and needs to be completely gone through. While it’s condition and history make it valuable, understand that it’s a project. It has the original SCCA log book and lots of race documents from the original owner. The car is located in Northwest Ohio. Buyer is responsible for pick up but I may consider some delivery options. I work with a company that ships containers to Australia each month so that is an option. Delivery/Shipping costs are NOT included in the sale!

It’s an “All steel” car with no fiberglass parts. It has vintage Minilite wheels (4 x 4.5), original pedals, steering, etc. In other words, it hasn’t been cut up too bad.

There is no engine included, but the sale will include the Weber 48 IDA and intake, and exhaust headers that the car used. Also included are a new Burns Stainless muffler, Mecca Accusump and the fuel filling parts the car used for the IMSA events.

The sale will also include the original transmission/bellhousing (with a lot of spares) that the car was raced with and a stock RX7 transmission.

The rear floor has been cut away and the car currently has a Speedway Engineering Mini-Quick change rear end in it. The car was raced with an MGB rear end. (Converted to rear discs) The original RX3 rear end housing is included as well. (Not pictured) I actually sold the Mini-Quick change to Bill but he never raced the car with that rear end.
The RX3 title that I got with this car does NOT match the car.
I do have engines available at an additional cost.
Please email me with questions or for specific pictures.
