Car Classification Update 2022

At VSCDA’s November Board meeting, Jim Donato proposed, and the Board approved, updates to our car classification system. Some of the details will be worked out over the winter with input from Board members, Tech, Group reps and interested members. The note below from Jim outlines the overall policy goals and should give almost anyone interested in racing with us comfort in making decisions about 2022 and later classification rules. Details will be posted once we work through them over the next month or so.

To all VSCDA members and others interested in racing with us:

The changes put into place by the Board will not alter our complete set of rules. What we have done is create a structure that allows more recent production-based cars to have a home with VSCDA.

A few of the main points:

  1. Cars built from 1989-1997 will be classed and placed inside our current system.

This change will not result in creating additional run groups. We are also not planning to materially increase the size of our larger run groups, particularly Groups 2 and 8.  In many instances, Group 6 sessions will run concurrently with the newly added production cars. As has been our practice, we will allow event chairs the flexibility to adjust run groups to best suit the entries of their event.  Our intent is that most racers will not have a materially different on track experience.

  1. Cars built from 1989-1997 will be subject to the 1997 GCR rules from their pro-racing history. All member racing cars will stay in their current run group unless they are modified to newer standards.
  2. We will now allow certain production-based cars that have the original production fuel tank above and or forward of the rear axle centerline. These cars will be required to have an approved by VSCDA on board fire system.  (Although the car may have a hand-held fire extinguisher, only an on board system will meet the requirement.) These cars must have a history of competition from a recognized pro-racing series.  A complete set of requirements will be posted shortly.
  3. 1989-1997 open wheel race cars will be allowed to run with us. Many of these and newer extension series cars of all varieties are already running with us on a case-by-case basis. We are taking steps to formalize their inclusion.
  4. Requirements for cars that are currently approved for racing with VSCDA will not change.

Most other vintage racing organizations already allow these newer cars to run with them. We have made the needed changes to include a broader and younger group of drivers. We have always welcomed drivers from all over the world to race with us. It is our responsibility to instill the Vintage Spirt into these drivers. So, I ask you to reach out and welcome them in 2022.  We all work tirelessly to make the VSCDA the best vintage race organization in the country. It is the goal of the Board to ensure VSCDA’s viability for at least another 40 years.

Thank you,

Jim Donato

Vice President VSCDA
